The Ramblers helps everyone, everywhere, enjoy walking and protects the places we all love to walk. We are the only charity dedicated to looking after paths and green spaces, leading walks, opening up new places to explore and encouraging everyone to get outside and discover how walking boosts your health and your happiness.

The Inner London Area of the Ramblers is made up of ten groups located in London. It is just one of many Areas that make up the national organisation.

Although London may not seem like an obvious location for walkers, there are over 12,000 Ramblers members living here, with about 4,500 of them in Inner London, making it one of the most populous areas for walkers to live in the UK. The Thames Path, which runs through our Area, is the most walked path in the country!

As well as walking in our own area, including in the very heart of London, we travel across the South East England, with groups regularly making trips to the Chilterns, South Downs, South Coast, Kent, Essex, Surrey, Hertfordshire, as well as further afield.

LL22 Carving in Pages WoodIntroducing the London Loop

The complete London Loop is a 150-mile circuit divided into 24 sections. This enjoyable walk explores the edges of London passing through beautiful open spaces such as Hainault Forest Country Park and Bushy Park. The Loop also passes close to many historic sites and buildings. The start and finish of all sections are accessible by public transport. Click here for an overview of the route.

Download your free walk guidance here (Updated December 2024)

Click on the title of a section, in the table below, to download the pdf file of walk guidance. Note that the distances in the table include the station links at the start and finish of each walk.

During 2020 - 21, Ramblers volunteers revised the text of the original TfL walk guides including the maps and the details about transport and other facilities for all sections of the Loop. All the files were rechecked and republished here - first in May 2022 and again in May 2023. Most recently all were checked again with the result that all but three of the files were updated in December 2024 and republished in February 2025. The PDFs are in a form that can be accessed by screen readers to help walkers with impaired vision.

You can download a certificate to show that you have completed the whole of the London Loop from the TfL web site.

Check up on any short term issues affecting the route

Ramblers volunteers, called Loop Leaders, monitor all sections of the Loop with the aim of ensuring that they are properly maintained and improved for the public to enjoy. We report on the London Loop news page of this web site any short term changes that make it difficult to walk any of the sections. Further information

We have published an alternative guide to all sections of the Loop in the free Go Jauntly app. Each section is described with step-by-step images and text with a link to a map view.

The London Loop was originally launched in 2001 by the London Walking Forum. It was maintained for some years by Transport for London but is now the responsibility of the authorities through which the sections pass. See the guidebook by Colin Saunders for further background information about the Loop and alternative walking guidance.

A new guidebook by Henry Stedman was published in the Summer of 2021 as part of the series of Trailblazer guides.
